New York
On Nov. 12, the New York Chapter, in conjunction with Warner Bros. Pictures, Southpaw Entertainment and CJ Entertainment, presented an advanced screening of August Rush at the IFC Center in Manhattan.
As the 150 guests arrived, they were treated to a free beverage from Tavalon Teas. The event began with an introduction of the film and The Recording Academy led by Executive Director Elizabeth Healy.
The film, which features Robin Williams, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Keri Russell, Freddie Highmore and Terrence Howard among others, was a hit with the audience. A drama with fairy tale elements, August Rush is the story of a spirited and unusually gifted child who hears music all around him in the rhythms of life. Orphaned by circumstance, he holds a profound and unwavering belief that his parents are alive and want him as much as he wants them. August believes that if they can hear his music, his parents will find him.
Following the screening, panelists including the film's Director Kirsten Sheridan, Producer Richard Barton Lewis, Original Score Composer Mark Mancina, multi-GRAMMY Award winner Phil Ramone and actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers spoke to the audience about the musical process in making this movie.
Phil Ramone remarked that this was a great experience and also pointed out that all of the singing voices and the instrumental parts in the film and on the soundtrack are of the actors themselves.
Attendees enjoyed having the chance to interact with the panelists and walked away from the event with newfound knowledge of both the challenges and the opportunities actors face when making a music-based movie.
